The Wee Care Whole Family Approach: How Loving a Student’s Family Delivers
For Ana Escarfuller, her experience with Wee Care has been about so much more than just her daughter’s attendance in the program. Ana’s daughter Lia, now in 6th grade at Oberlin Middle School, went through the program with her cousin Julian and their older cousin Luna was a member of the first ever Wee Care class – making it very much a family affair.
Ana and Lia loved their time with Mrs. Laurie & Mrs. Ellen so much that Lia often asks to go visit them after her school day, knowing she’s just around the corner. And while Lia is thriving in school, Ana credits the program with not only giving her daughter the confidence and experience to succeed, but providing a loving environment for her whole family.
“Ellen and Laurie are great, not just with kids but with family too,” said Escarfuller. “They care about the whole family and are there for support. Lia learned how to eat her vegetables, her letters, manners, how to potty train. What they provide is more than just academics – it’s teaching life skills that we value as a family.”
Ana was able to come into the classroom during Lia’s time at Wee Care and volunteer on occasion, and she says what she witnessed was an environment that treated every child with the same love and respect – something Lia has taken with her into daily life.
“The way they care about your kids matters,” said Ana. “You want other people to love your kids like Ellen and Laurie do. They implement love, caring and positivity, and they show love to an entire family no matter what.”
Ana hopes that Wee Care can continue to grow, and she is particularly thrilled to see the addition of the afternoon class. “What Laurie and Ellen are doing is working. It helps single mothers like me and anyone that needs their kids in a loving environment where they have a chance to learn and grow.”
